3- day Intensive Update Course in Autism and Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) with other neurodevelopmental disorders which was the focus of the 3-day workshop organized by the Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CCAMH) in June is undoubtedly one of the most serious child mental disorders. ASD can manifest in various ways which include hyperactivity, impaired communication, self-harm, isolated play and a penchant for sameness.

The key facilitators included:

Dr. Cornelius Ani who is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in the United Kingdom, has trained extensively in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He also works extensively with patients with autism and their families.

Dr. Wendy Vogel is also a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in Cape Town, South Africa. She has vast training and experience in South Africa and the United Kingdom with children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders particularly autism.

Professor IkeOluwa Lagunju is a professor of paediatrics at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan as well as a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. Her research and training spans several areas of Paediatric research in Africa and the United Kingdom.

Dr. Mashudat Abiola Bello-Mojeed is a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Sevice Center at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Lagos. She is a member of advocacy and support groups and initiatives for autism. She is presently involved in ongoing research studies in Nigeria.

Dr. Yetunde Adeniyi is Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and the Director of the Early Development, Learning and Care Centre. She is one of two pioneer Fellows in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry certified by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
